🖼️Access Your Inner Holiday Curator 🖼️
It’s November and a new role sneaks in to most people’s lives…Holiday Coordinator. I’d like to offer a different role…Holiday Curator.
Before you accept this role, here’s the reminder of what curators actually do. Museums don’t display everything they own or that is being loaned to them. They hire a curator who chooses what belongs in the season’s exhibit, what stays in storage, and what needs to be sent elsewhere. They don’t try to keep everything or make everything fit.
Could we bring that mindset into the upcoming season?
Because here’s what a Holiday Curator does…
- Decides what goes on the calendar (and what stays off).
- Chooses where the money gets spent.
- Selects which meals will be made, cards will be sent, gifts will be bought.
- Weighs how much energy will go toward keeping old traditions or trying new ones.
This role takes time, thought, and energy. Each year, you have a choice: curate or let the season happen to you.
Taking on this role doesn’t make you cruise director or martyr, or the one holding it all together by default. You will be the one who looks at the time, money and energy available and choose what belongs…for you.
That’s agency in action. It’s remembering: this is your life, your season, your family’s story. You don’t have accept every expectation or tradition just because it shows up.
If you’d like to try this role out this year, here are two assignments to help you:
First
- What matters most this year?
- What can shift to storage for now?
- Where do you need white space?
Second
Ask the people in your life who are sharing the season with you: What matters most this year to you?
Their answers are almost always surprising. The tradition you’ve been breaking your back to keep might not even make their top three and the small one might be the heart of the season for them.
It’s about listening, prioritizing and shaping a season that reflects what really matters to you and the people you love.
Instead of cramming your calendar full of every invitation, tradition and expectation, what if you curated? What if you chose, with intention, what deserves space this year?
You are the curator of your season. If you accept the role, you can affect all the big days like Thanksgiving, Christmas, amd New Year’s and all the ordinary days in between in the best of ways.
Let’s not just survive the holidays, let’s curate them.
I’ll be cheering you and can’t wait to hear what and how your curate your season.
