Welcome September!
Let’s talk about the next right thing
It’s September. My body and my head are chomping at the bit for a fresh plan. Between going to school, being a teacher, raising my kids, starting over in September is in my bones. I love a good reset. We buy new pencils, declutter the house, think about rotating the clothes in a closets and begin dreaming of soup…even if the thermometer is still screaming summer. We make lists. The days get a little shorter. The energy begins to shift. After several full seasons, I welcome the chance to down shift and ask:
What’s the next right thing?
One thing, not all the things. I’m not looking for the most efficient thing, or the one that earns me a gold star. Just… the next right thing.
I love the structure that the work of Emily P. Freeman brings to figuring this out. She has a whole book on it, which makes me feel so validated. It seems so simple. It’s magical when I can actually do it. It’s also easy to get out of the habit of asking. I often think I’m asking the question, but really, I’m asking: What’s next? And I look down at my planner or my trusty to-do list for the answer.
The heart of this question is…What is right? Okay, but slow down all my sweet perfectionist friends. I don’t mean right as in “get the A on the test” or score of 100%. That’s the kind of that has us chasing someone else’s standards. It’s vague about who decides, and it gives the world a little too much power over our moment, and eventually our direction. The world will offer all kinds of answers. Right is what looks productive. Right is what keeps everyone happy. Right is what doesn’t disappoint. Right is what gets the most likes.
What if….
Right is what aligns with your values? It’s what honors your energy. It’s what brings you back to peace. It’s what helps you stay true to showing up as your True Self.
In this month of fresh plans, resets, and fresh starts, I’m practicing a more specific question:
What’s the next right thing, for me, right now?
I’m not looking for the perfect thing, or a forever thing. I’m looking for the choice that helps me live from love and brings me back to center. It might be drinking some water. It might be clearing a shelf. It might be making a nourishing meal. It might be saying yes to rest or no to pressure.
I make the process hard sometimes when I forget the right includes me: my energy, my values, my reality. I try to figure out right for everyone else.
Here’s my September experiment:
To trust the voice inside that’s learning to lead with love and do the next, right thing, for me, right now.
It’s not a test. It’s an opportunity.

Email me your next right thing right now after reading this post and I’ll turn our responses into Pinterest pin. Bonus points if you also commit to doing the next right thing, right now once a day for the month of September! It might end up being the same thing every day, or something different every day.
I’ll go first.
My next right thing right now?
A walk outside in the sun. π
I’ll be cheering you on as I go get some vitamin D.
