It’s that week again.

Christmas is over, but the New Year hasn’t arrived yet. The house smells faintly of pine and sugar cookies. The wrapping paper has been gathered, then scattered again by the dog. Someone’s lost the crucial piece of the brand-new Lego set, and you suspect it went out with the trash. Many of us have a few extra days off. Instead of letting us rest, the world tells us to rev up.

Check your inbox lately? Think big. Make plans. Shop all the sales. Conquer every mountain. My inbox is on 🔥. Promises of resetting! Reinventing! Reorganizing!
All the programs to start the year. All the systems that to solve everything in three steps, seven days, or thirty days.  Don't get me wrong.  I love a good program.  I really do, but I always wish these offers came a few weeks later.

What if we waited?

What if we let this week be a landing instead of a launchpad?
What if we staged a little rebellion and decided this week is about receiving, not achieving?

Who invented this idea that we start the new year with all these resolutions, new planners, and programs, hot on the heels of one of the busiest seasons of the year?

Is there ever a time of year when women do more planning than the Christmas season?

We’ve been meal-planning, gift-planning, calendar-planning, logistics-planning since before Thanksgiving.

We’ve wrapped, shopped, mailed, decorated, hosted, and maybe cried a little in the Target parking lot.

And now, we’re supposed to plan the next year?
Before the tree is even down?

Whose idea was this? Truly. And why are we buying into it?

This year, I want to do it differently.
As the house sits full of leftovers and half-burned candles, I want to slow down.
To let this time be about exhaling and resting.
To begin the New Year from a place of peace instead of Frazzle, Version 2.0.

If you aren’t feeling the energy those emails are promising, you might just be…tired. You may not have the “start your engines” energy right now.

I see you.

You’ve served and wrapped and cooked. You’ve carried so much and cared for so many.
After giving so much of yourself to family, to work, to celebration, I want to challenge you to rest.

To embrace the beauty of letting the noise fade, the schedule loosen, and the soul catch up.
To start your year from the energy of rest.

Before you pick your word of the year or buy the “plan your year” workshop or sign up for the goal-setting class...rest.
Before you try to organize all that the next year can hold...rest.

So let’s all settle in.
Snuggle on the couch. Hug the dog.
Soak up the joy and revel in all the work you’ve done instead of rushing to the next thing.

Just try it.

I’ll be cheering you on, in my pajamas, with the electric blanket going, and a good cup of tea in hand.
