Shoes, Sock Thieves, and the Surprise of Delight

Have you heard about these shoes called Kiziks?
You don’t tie them.  You step into them.

I needed a new pair of shoes, so I decided to try them.  They were supposed to have plenty of support and be great for walking.

They. Are. Amazing.

I was gushing about them to a friend, singing their praises like someone who’d discovered electricity. She laughed and asked, “Wait. Are you okay?  Are things so crazy you’re saving time by not tying your shoes?”

Which was funny, but not why I was gushing.

It’s true you don’t have to tie them.  You can step right in and they do feel wonderful. That’s why  I thought I was buying them.  When they arrived, something delightful happened.

They made walking my dog, and hosting visiting canines, so much easier.

In this house, tying your shoes is not neutral. It’s a signal,  a canine call to arms.  It says, “Something is happening!”  It could be a car ride, hopefully a walk, definitely joy.

But first? Chaos.

Prancing.  Paws mashing toes. Wiggling. Barking.  The fetching of random socks.  It’s a starting gun.

Along comes these Kiziks.  Step in.  Resident four paws and visiting four paws? Clueless. No stomped toes.  No head butts.  Walking time feels like a whole different experience, until I reach for leashes, of course. By then, my toes and feet are safe.

Instant margin.
Instant sanity.
Definitely a moment of delight.

I’ve been leaning into delight lately.
What creates it? Where can I find it?  How do I sprinkle more of it into the ordinary.  It turns out that delight is often created by doing something kind for your future self.

Here are a few delight-makers I’m loving lately:

Here’s a few ways to create delight in your day.

  • Keeping extra trash bags tucked under the one is use. Future you is going to be so pleased when you lift that full bag and, surprise! The next one is waiting like a well-trained assistant.
  • Freezing your grown up kid’s favorite meals. The joy of pulling out homemade chicken pot pie or mushroom risotto when they visit?  Delight for both of you.  It’s love, ready to reheat.
  • Set tomorrow’s alarms the night before. Let your brain rest easy, knowing that the scheduled items won’t get forgotten.
  •  Have a Monday outfit. Just one. A favorite. A decision already made to lean into as Monday brings all the things.
  • Buy only black socks. Same brand, same style. No post laundry matching. No looking. Just grab two.
  • Set a meal for a day of the week. Thursdays are for steak salad around here.  It’s such a kindness to my Thursday self.
  • Writing the date on condiments when you open them. Nothing says “I love you” to your future self like sparing her from a game of Expired?  Or Not?
  • Color-coding charging cords. We all know cord thieves are real, and now you can slow them down.

Your future self is going to be so delighted by how you set her up!  Step into that.  πŸ˜‰πŸ‘Ÿ

Meanwhile, I’ll be cheering you on while I write a thank-you note to this shoe company, possibly signed with a paw print. 🐾
