We’ve spent this month on creativity. We’ve talked about what happens when creativity slips into the luxury category; how we set it down for good reasons and forget to pick it back up.  We spent time with Mud Pie Annie, who didn’t wait for approval or the right tools.  She just made things, with what was nearby, because it mattered to her.  We sat with Elizabeth Gilbert’s invitation to stay curious without guarantees; to show up and participate, even when the results aren’t glamorous.

Now we get to do something with all of that.

I’d like to invite you into a rhythm  I’m calling taking your creative vitamin. I believe creativity is essential, not optional, like daily vitamins. Creativity expands us.  It makes us feel more alive, and more like ourselves. Like vitamins, it works best when we “take” it regularly, not just when we remember.

Here’s what that can look like:

Choose something creative that fits your life right now.  Then choose a rhythm that fits this season.

·       Daily: 5-10 minutes

·       Weekly: one protected block of 30-60 minutes.

Let it be nourishing.

Choose something that brings you pleasure, is low pressure, and is mostly for you.  The isn’t to produce something impressive.  It’s to notice what helps you feel creative.

You might be drawn to reading , listening to music, or wandering through a museum, especially if life is full and you need something low stakes.  Those are lovely, and I’d like to gently cheer you one step further.

I’d love for you to practice creativity; to make something, to play, experiment, and find out what fits this season of your life. Practicing creativity, not just experiencing it through someone else’s work, regulates your nervous system.  It changes you think. It shapes how you show up for everything else.

Annie didn’t create for an audience. She created because something about it mattered to her.

We get to do that too.

As you take your creative vitamin, hold this thought:

I make space and time for creativity.

We’re not waiting for a free afternoon that may never come. We’re deciding, in this season, that creativity isn’t the thing we’ll get back to eventually.  It’s something we’re protecting now.

Try things.
Play a little.
Notice what happens.

No one reminded us to pick creativity back up when the busy season passed, so I want to remind you.

I’ll be cheering you on and I can’t wait to hear what you choose for your creative vitamin.
