Let's Talk about Training Instead of Trying

There’s a quote from Craig Groeschel’s The Power to Change that feels like it belongs with the new year and all our planning and goals.

“To try is to attempt to do the right thing by exerting effort in the moment. To train is to commit to developing strategic habits that equip you to do the right thing in the moment.”

Trying is what we do when we’re getting ready. We prep, we plan, we think through the options, and we tell ourselves, I’m going to do this.

Training, though, is what happens when we stop getting ready and start moving.
It’s not just about deciding — it’s about doing. It’s not about waiting for motivation — it’s about showing up for the next right action consistently.

That’s why I created the Take Action Community — because real transformation doesn’t happen in the planning stage. It happens when we carve out time and do the work.  Doing it together, well that's just putting a bow on it.  (If you are looking for the community, you have to sign up for the newsletter.   The link is included in the newsletter each week.)

In our community, we don’t wait until we feel ready.
We train by investing 50 minutes at a time toward what matters.

If you had 42 hours to give toward a goal this year, could you make progress?  Would a whole work week move the needle? I believe it would!  Guess what...that's one 50 minute sprint a week. One.  Want to put Two work weeks into a goal?  That's two 50 minute sprints a week.  You don't have 50 minutes a week?  15 minutes twice a week would mean putting 26 hours toward your goal. Consistency adds up. One of the major differences in training verse trying is time invested in taking action.  Making the time to take action towards our goal is how we go from prepping to practicing. It's how we move from " I want to" to “I did.”

Choose your own sprints and mark them on your calendar or come work on things in our weekly virtual sprints.  You bring the goals and I'll bring the pom poms.

Here's to all the training we will do in 2026.  I'd love to make a list of the goals we are working on and the time we are committing to them.  Will you email me and let me know?   Tell me your time commitment, too.  ([email protected]) I'd love to cheer you on!

Speaking of trying verses training, I've been trying to get my Substack page going for well...about a year...now I'm officially training.   Here's my link.  Come join the conversation. (I'll post the audio version of the blog here on Wednesdays.)
