A Sparkling Reminder to Celebrate the Little Things
Confession: Topo Chico is my guilty pleasure on a hot summer day. (Okay. Probably any day.) It’s just a small, happy, sparkle-in-a-glass celebration for me. I like it plain. I love it cold. It’s joy. Bottled.
Last year, I discovered Topo Chico with a twist of lime. My joy doubled. Tripled. Became carbonated. Sadly, I only found I once. It’s like it disappeared the moment I found it, which feels personal. Last week, miracle of miracles, I found it. Sitting on the grocery store shelf like it hadn’t ghosted me for the better part of a year. I filled my cart like it might ghost me again. This was joy insurance. Then, while wandering the local Target in the throws of being remodeled, I was playing the “where is everything” detective game, and I bumped into (literally) a stack of Topo Chico grapefruit cases. What? Topo Chico with a twist of grapefruit? Be. Still. My. Heart. My fridge now looks like a citrus-themed spa retreat. Somewhere in the middle of this bubbly bliss, I caught myself saying:
“This is unreasonable joyful.”
Is there such a thing? Is there such a thing as being unreasonably joyful?
No.
No. No. No. No.
Absolutely not.
Now, listen. I know. Glass bottles, cardboard cases, it’s not exactly an environment love letter. Yes, plain water is probably better for me. But this is like glitter in a bottle…and not the kind that makes a mess. (Unless you drop it. On a tile floor. Such a sad day.) This is the kind that shimmers on the inside. A tiny celebration. A sparkle of yes on an ordinary day. It might not be the most sensible thing, but I think that’s okay. I’m not sure joy, especially the small, fizzy, ridiculous kind is supposed to be sensible. It’s not about productivity. Or purpose. Or making it count. It’s about noticing the tiny flickers of delight and soaking in something good.
It’s just sparkling mineral water…or…it’s the reminder that delight doesn’t have to be earned. That moments of lightness belong in our everyday life, and that sometimes, joy is reason enough. If you’ve forgotten what your version of everyday joy feels like, here’s your gentle nudge:
Find it. Stock up. Celebrate it like it’s limited edition.
(Because sometimes it is.)
Tell me, what’s your Topo Chico right now?
That little thing that’s carrying you through?
The small sparkly joy that’s just right for you?
Also: turns out when have an abundance of Topo Chico and multiple flavors in your house, you get very excited when people show up. Can I offer you a drink? Please. Please. Let me share my joy. (Possibly a true story.)
I’m raising my glass of Topo Chico as I cheer you on,
